Decide how the home should work before deciding where everything goes.

A useful electrical brief starts with people, rooms and everyday use. Furniture, circulation, lighting, comfort, connected systems and future loads all affect the infrastructure hidden behind the finished surfaces.

That is why early electrical planning matters for a self-build or new home: not every project needs every technology, but the decisions that do matter should be joined up while plans can still influence the installation.

The connected brief

This is not a universal specification. It is a way to expose important interfaces before walls, ceilings, floors and external works close the practical routes.

Supply & distribution

Incoming supply, major electrical loads, distribution locations, plant space, accessible routes and reasonable future capacity.

Rooms & everyday use

Furniture, kitchens, utility equipment, home working, screens, circulation and control positions planned around real use.

Lighting & control

Functional, architectural, decorative, joinery, low-level and exterior lighting considered with ceilings, finishes and zones.

Data, security & access

Wired data, equipment locations, wireless access-point provision, CCTV infrastructure, intercoms, gates and access where required.

Heating, EV & energy

Electrical interfaces for heating or hot water, EV charging, solar and battery readiness, monitoring and possible load management.

Garden lighting, external power, outbuildings and routes across future landscaping, with sensible provision for foreseeable expansion.

Coordinate early

The value is in the relationships between decisions.

Room use affects lighting. Lighting affects control zones and cabling. Heating, EV charging, solar, batteries and other larger loads can affect the wider electrical brief. External systems need routes before finished landscaping makes them difficult to add.

Start with the plans, project location and current stage—not a demand for a finished tender pack.

Discuss how rooms should work, what systems are genuinely being considered and which decisions are still open.

Identify interfaces

Bring the electrical, lighting, control, network, energy and external requirements into one practical conversation.
